Year Composed :  2008

Duration : 10 min.

Soloist :  horn

Programme Note

Ancient Greek word: Ialemos was the sound uttered by mourners.

Ancient Greek music theory distinguished between three genera of tetrachords: diatonic, chromatic and enharmonic.  An enharmonic tetrachord is divided (descending) as a ditone (major third) plus two microtones.

Greek music always seems to have used two identical tetrachords to build the octave. The single tone could be placed between the two tetrachords (between the perfect fourth and the perfect fifth, termed “disjunctive”), or it could be placed at either end of the scale (termed “conjunctive”).
